Interact • Archive Polls Poll 2007-08From June 2007 to November 2008, site visitors were given the opportunity to vote in the third major Erasure poll run on this site.
In total 193 visitors completed the poll and the results are published below. These results have been compared to the previous Poll 2003-04
to see if views have changed since the last poll was ran all those years a go. Where applicable, the
following graphical key compares the results of this poll to those of the Poll 2003-04.
Sex
Male fans continue to greatly outnumber female fans, with a massive 86% of fans having the Y chromosome. The number of female fans has actually declined somewhat since the last poll was run. Are female fans really moving on? Age
No surprise that as time ticks on, the average age of an Erasure fan increases, with over two third now in the 31-40 years old bracket. The 21 and unders continue to decline, down 50% on the previous poll, which sadly indicates that a new generation of youngsters are not becoming Erasure fans. Given the boys' lack of recent chart success and media coverage this is no shock to anyone. Favourite Erasure Album
In the last poll, Erasure pipped Chorus by a single vote, but this time Chorus was a clear winner picking up over a quarter of the total vote. Encouraging new entries for Nightbird and Light At The End Of The World help to hide the fact that the other albums released in the 2000s managed just two votes between them. For the third time running, The Two Ring Circus comes last, although surely Wonderland is a better album than zero votes would imply? Favourite Erasure Song
For the first time, votes for multiple songs was encouraged resulting in many more nominations than ever before. The result sees A Little Respect regain the crown it won in Poll 2000-01, comfortably knocking the surprise runner-up Drama! into second place. The previous winner Always slips to third place. In My Arms and Am I Right?, both of which charted well in the previous two polls, drop out of the top 15. The only songs from the 21st Century to make the grade are Sunday Girl and Breathe in 11th and 12th place. Favourite Erasure B-Side
After two successive victories, Don't Suppose is relegated to the runners-up spot as Tenderest Moments moves up one place to #1. No doubt the inclusion of this track on Union Street opened it up to a wider audience and hence is probably responsible for its victory. The excellent Tragic moves into the top 4 and there are five new entries in the Top 10 with the biggest drop going to La La La - fourth last time out, this time it just slips outside the Top 10. Favourite Erasure Sleeve
Well, it's almost pointless running this categories as I Say I Say I Say always wins - and by a massive margin! That's not the say it's not a worthy winner, because it clearly is. No change at number two either although there were high new entries for Nightbird and Light At The End Of The World. If it was down to me, all the singles from I Say I Say I Say would make the Top 10. As it is, only Always made it and moves up four places to into the Top 3. Favourite Erasure Video
A Little Respect makes it two successive wins in this categories, seeing off Love To Hate You by a single vote. Previous joint winners Am I Right? and Make Me Smile (Come Up & See Me) both fall, whilst Poll 2000-01 winner Always climbs back into the Top 3. Largely I'd say the best Erasure videos are found above, although Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer's Day) really should be in the Top 10, but just missed out this time around coming in at #11. Favourite Erasure Cover Version
Solbury Hill lasts the test of time and regains its top spot in the covers category. Make Me Smile (Come Up & See Me) and Goodnight both drop from the top three as the winner from Poll 2000-01, Take A Chance On Me (my least favourite of the Abba covers), climbs into second place. Three b-sides make the top 10 which isn't exactly an endorsement for the Other People's Songs album! Favourite Erasure Remix
Joint winners in this category, and both very worthy winners they are too. Previous winner Always - Microbots Trance Dance Mix falls to 5th place and the chart is swamped by new entries with two coming joint third. It's nice to see Hideaway - Little Louie Vega Mix climbing up the table as this is one of the few Erasure remixes out there that is superior to the original version. Least Favourite Erasure Album
The much maligned Loveboat makes it two successive "victories" in this categories picking up over a quarter of the total vote. The fact that a massive 76% of the votes have gone to albums released since the turn of the century is another damning commentary on the quality of the band's output in the 00s. Despite not receiving a single vote in the favourite album category, Wonderland is nowhere near the top in this category either, implying the album is neither held in high or low regard by fans in general. Least Favourite Erasure Song
Three in a row for La Gloria with the Top 3 being the same songs as previously. 91 Steps, Vince's answer to Tubular Bells, sticks in fifth place with five new entries entering the Top 10. Video Killed The Radio Star is several places too low and Sucker For Love should also have made the list, but only come in joint 14th. Two Loveboat tracks make the list - it really isn't the fans' most favourite is it! Favourite Wonderland Track
A resounding win for Oh L'amour, which romps home to victory with 28% of the total vote. The upbeat Love Is A Loser and Reunion complete the top three. No surprise to see Pistol coming last with only a solitary vote to its name - after all this track was not included on the US release of this album. Least Favourite Wonderland Track
Pistol is the clear winner in this category with Say What in second and Heavenly Action, the single that just scraped into the Top 100 of The Official UK Singles Chart back in 1985 come in third. No other track received more than 10% of the total vote. Favourite The Circus Track
The excellent Hideaway is the triumphant winner, surprisingly beating the hit single Sometimes into second place. The sublime Spiralling does well to secure 4th place just behind Victim Of Love. I must admit I didn't expect to see If I Could coming last - surely this is superior to In The Hall Of The Mountain King? Least Favourite The Circus Track
The drab cover of In The Hall Of The Mountain King rightfully comes out on top here, with over a third of the total vote. Disappointingly Sexuality is in second place - I for one think it's a great track. No surprises to see Hideaway and Sometimes at the bottom; this just confirms their popularity. Favourite The Innocents Track
Little surprise to see the timeless A Little Respect come out as the winner here, nor to see the excellent Phantom Bride in second. Interestingly, the first three tracks register nearly two-thirds of the total votes - does this mean the opening songs are exceptionally good or that the album declines rapidly afterwards? I'll let you be the judge of that. Least Favourite The Innocents Track
Absolutely no surprises here, except for the number of votes for Sixty-Five Thousand - surely more than 52% of you feel it is the weakest track on the album (how did A Little Respect get three votes?!). This fairly pointless instrumental would have been better served as an b-side, allowing the fine Don't Suppose a place on the album instead. Favourite Wild! Track
Given that Drama! came second in the favourite song section, its victory here is to be expected, although personally I feel Blue Savannah is a more worthy winner. It's nice to see Brother And Sister in third place although I'm not sure where the single vote for Piano Song - Instrumental came from - surely the vocal version is far superior? Least Favourite Wild! Track
Another undesirable "accolade" for La Gloria as the Spanish themed track registered over a third of the total vote. The less serious songs aren't especially popular as 2000 Miles gets the runners-up spot. Star also seems a bit undervalued obtaining 7% of the vote. Perhaps the lamentable video has turned some fans off this track. Favourite Chorus Track
A very close category which eventually saw my least favourite track, Chorus, win with 20% of the votes. The brilliant Waiting For The Day is rightly up there with the singles Breath Of Life and Love To Hate You. Joan appears to be a bit underrated to me, but there has to be a track has to comes last. Least Favourite Chorus Track
Joan cements its place as the fans' least favourite Chorus track having received 55 votes in this category. It is interesting to note that the most popular in the favourites vote did not receive the lowest number of votes in this poll. Whilst Home only just made the Top 5 in the favourites poll, here it gets the joint least number of votes. Favourite I Say I Say I Say Track
Always predictably was the clear winner in this category, with the phenomenal Take Me Back coming in second place. Largely, there wasn't a great deal between the rest of the tracks, although So The Story Goes is a little adrift at the bottom. Man In The Moon appears to be another track that's not especially popular, despite my fondness for it. Least Favourite I Say I Say I Say Track
Despite only receiving two votes in the favourite category, So The Story Goes is not voted the least popular track from I Say I Say I Say, with Blues Away topping this poll with over a quarter of the vote. Quite how Always got two votes in this poll is frankly anyone's guess! Favourite Erasure Track
Another clear winner as the excellent Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer's Day) received over twice as many votes as its closest rival Sono Luminus. And to think this song may never have evolved from Cold Summer's Day and could have been missed by many fans. I'm not sure how Intro - Guess I'm Into Feeling got its one solitary vote. Least Favourite Erasure Track
Intro - Guess I'm Into Feeling, or a poor man's True Love Wars as I like to refer to it as, rightfully gained the most votes in this category although I am surprised and disappointed to see A Long Goodbye in the Top 3. Barring the opening track, the majority of the votes come for tracks in the second half of the album. Favourite Cowboy Track
With a fifth of the votes, the sublime Save Me Darling is the most popular song from Cowboy, with the three singles from this album completing the Top 4. There aren't many votes separating the remaining tracks which begs the question why wasn't Save Me Darling released as a single? Least Favourite Cowboy Track
Numerous contenders in this category, implying there is no stand out track that is weaker than the rest. Love Affair obtained the most votes, which I can just about accept, but Reach Out in second? I love that track! Worlds On Fire is one of those tracks that got few votes in both categories, suggesting it is neither adored or despised in general. Favourite Loveboat Track
Alien is the worthy winner here, with over a fifth of the overall vote. Whilst I certainly agree it is the best song on Loveboat, the much debated production issues do hamper the track, meaning I prefer the acoustic version instead. No surprise to see the leading single Freedom up in second place. Least Favourite Loveboat Track
I certainly concur with the verdict here: Mad As We Are is the weakest track from this album in my opinion also. I think Surreal is under-appreciated though, having come in second place with 16% of the vote. Perchance To Dream seems to divide the fans with this track receiving the same number of votes in the favourite and least favourite categories. Favourite Other People's Songs Track
With a massive 40% of the vote, Solsbury Hill destroys the opposition to come out on top in this category. The two other clear album highlights rightfully come in second and third. Indeed with over three quarters of the total vote, the Top 3 really have shown themselves to be substantially more popular than the rest of the album. Least Favourite Other People's Songs Track
Mercifully, the dreadful Video Killed The Radio Star received more votes than any other song in this category. It really should never have made the album in the first place. Ebb Tide is a better track than its second place implies, although the same cannot be said about Walking In The Rain, which came in third. Favourite Nightbird Track
I rate Breathe as the finest song of the decade by any artist, so I'd have been mortified if it hadn't come out on top in this category! All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love and Here I Go Impossible Again are second and third respectively, although I'd liked to have seen Don't Say You Love Me above both of these. Least Favourite Nightbird Track
There were two stand out tracks in this category with Because Our Love Is Real just shading I'll Be There to top of this category. I think I Broke It All In Two should have received the most votes, purely because of its very clumsy lyrics, but with 9% of the total vote, I'm clearly in the minority. Favourite Union Street Track
Tenderest Moments, previously only released as b-side to the Run To The Sun single in 1994, was by far the most popular track in this category accumulating 29% of the votes. Only Boy and Home managed over 10% with little to separate the remaining tracks. Least Favourite Union Street Track
Having been voted the least popular track from I Say I Say I Say, Blues Away also scoops the least favourite Union Street track too. Love Affair and Boy both got plenty of votes in Cowboy's least popular category and received plenty more here showing that a new arrangement does little to change people's opinions of these tracks. Favourite Light At The End Of The World Track
With nearly a quarter of the votes, Sunday Girl is the worthy winner here, finishing ahead of the album's leading single I Could In Love With You. With 78% of the votes going to the opening six tracks it seems this is an album of two halves, with the first half clearly being the more popular. Least Favourite Light At The End Of The World Track
I confess I'm at a loss to explain how Darlene and How My Eyes Adore You (two tracks I enjoy very much) obtained more votes than both Sucker For Love and Glass Angel (in my opinion two of the weakest album tracks the boys have ever done) but the people have spoken, and they clearly don't share my views! Song That Made You A Fan
Sometimes and Oh L'amour trade places, but although it is to be expected, it is disappointing to see none of the newer singles make the list, with the most recent song being Always from 1994. Naturally with no real smash hit singles since this time, it is little surprise that subsequent singles failed to win over substantial new fans. First Erasure Album Owned
With The Innocents being Erasure's best selling album domestically, and having spawned international hits such as Chains Of Love and A Little Respect it comes as little surprise to see this album come out top here. On the flip side, despite bombing in the charts, Wonderland came in second gaining plenty of lifelong fans. Rather depressingly since 1995's Erasure album, very few albums have won over new fans. Song That Should Have Been A Single
All cracking tracks, but for the third successive time, Phantom Bride is voted as being the best choice for a single that never happened. Save Me Darling climbs back in the runners-up spot, a position obtained after the Poll 2000-01 was conducted with Alien being the biggest faller, moving down five places to 7th. Dreamlike State is a new entry in joint 10th place and is the only song listed that wasn't even included on an album. Song That Shouldn't Have Been A Single
Given it only reached #100 in UK Singles Chart I suppose it's understandable that Heavenly Action would receive the most votes, along with Stay With Me which always seemed to wrong choice of leading single from the Erasure album. There is barely a hit single in this list, but quiet how Blue Savannah and The Circus (albeit with only a handful of votes) made the Top 10 is very surprising. Favourite Other Bands / Artists
The Top Two remain unchanged for the third successive time with little changes in the Top Six. Plenty of new entries complete the Top 10 with the only "new" band making the list being the Scissor Sisters. Abba, Coldplay, Soft Cell, Sparks, Beatles, Client, Goldfrap, Kylie Minogue, The Killers and U2 also received several votes. |
